History

During history At Hunloke Park, teachers ensure they have progressively covered the skills and concepts required in the National Curriculum. All learning is enquiry based, allowing the children to ask and answer their own questions. We aim to develop historical skills and concepts which are revisited throughout different topics, these are: Historical Interpretations; Historical Investigations; Chronological Understanding; Knowledge and Understanding of Events, People and Changes in the Past; Presenting, Organising and Communicating.

We teach on a two year cycle to meet the needs of mixed age classes. The timeframe being studied is always placed in the context of the history of the wider world so the children are able to build on their understanding of the chronology of history. As chronology skills progress, children begin to build a picture of how some historical events occurred concurrently in different locations, e.g. Ancient Egypt and the Stone Age. The periods and events studied are linked to how they have impacted our everyday lives. The curriculum is designed to facilitate an understanding of the possibilities the skills of an historian may bring in later life in respect to travel and careers.

We also aim to develop an understanding of how Britain and the world became diverse through the process of trade and travel – how culture developed and changed due to invaders and settlers and migration and how world and local attitudes were affected by significant historical events. We involve, where possible, the wider community, experts and speakers in the historical journey of the children.

Geography

At Hunloke Park, teachers ensure they have progressively covered the skills and concepts required in the geography National Curriculum. All learning is enquiry based, allowing the children to ask and answer their own questions. We aim to develop geographical skills and concepts which are revisited throughout different topics, these are: geographical knowledge (locational/ world knowledge), geographical understanding (place and human and physical geography- conditions, processes), geographical skills, enquiry and field work. Our curriculum develops contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places. It develops an understanding of the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world in a diverse range of places and countries. It also develops an understanding of how geographical processes bring about variation and change over time.

In each key phase there is a focus on the local area, understanding its development and the change of land use over time, this ensures a deeper understanding of community and the local area. We involve, where possible, the wider community, experts and speakers in the geographical journey of the children. The curriculum is designed to facilitate an understanding of the possibilities the skills of a geographer may bring in later life in respect to travel and careers.
