Music & Languages

Music

Hunloke Park Primary School delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, extra-curricular provision and musical experiences.

Curriculum Music

At Hunloke Park Primary School we follow the Model Music Curriculum and Charanga Music Scheme. Here at Hunloke Park we have adapted the units to create our own two-year cycle that fits into our whole school curriculum.

Each Year group has units designed for their learning and that enable and show progression as children move through school. Each unit covers the key skills of music which are listening and responding to music, performing, composing and improvisation.

Extra-Curricular Music

Hunloke Park Primary also offers music tuition outside of the set music lessons. These include drumming, Ukelele, Piano and a school choir that takes place after school.

Tuition usually takes place during the school day, with individuals or small groups of pupils leaving part of their curriculum lessons to attend.

The Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership helps with the cost of instrumental and vocal lessons through various schemes including financial subsidies for:

  • New starters
  • Pupils continuing from Wider Opportunities (whole-class music lessons)
  • SEN pupils
  • Families facing financial hardship
  • Tuition on rarer instruments
  • Additional support for pupils performing at higher grades

Children have the opportunity to perform with these groups either in assembly, school fairs and alongside other school choirs. The choir also sings for the local community and our Christmas Carol Concert and at the local church hall for Christmas meals.

We also offer on after school Musical Theatre club that has proven to be very popular

Musical Experiences

Here at Hunloke Park Primary we aim to give the children a wide variety of musical experiences. Each week we have a whole school singing assembly, this covers a range and variety of songs each half term.

We like to put on Christmas performances such as Nativities, Carols in the Yard and the choir sing for the local residence at their annual Christmas Lunch.

We have taken the younger children to the theatre and our children have the wonderful experience of the Hale concert.

In the Future

In the near future we hope to expand on the number of opportunities we offer children in terms of instrumental lessons to include Brass.

Further Information

Our aim is for children to develop a curiosity and enthusiasm for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the diversity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may play in any person’s life. As children move through school they will begin to explore, engage and then express themselves through music. In this way they will develop skills that will inspire them to think creatively, not just in the music classroom, but across all aspects of their life

Languages

At Hunloke Park Primary School, we use the scheme PlanIt French. This is a carefully planned sequence of lessons, ensuring progressive coverage of the skills required by the national curriculum. The themes – Time Travelling, Let’s Visit a French Town and This Is France – provide an introduction to the culture of French-speaking countries and communities. It aims to foster our children’s curiosity and help deepen their understanding of the world. It enables our pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in French and provides opportunities to interact and communicate with others both in speech and in writing. The scheme offers regular opportunities to listen to native speakers.

Through our French scheme, we intend to inspire pupils to develop a love of languages and to expand their horizons to other countries, cultures and people. We aim to help children grow into curious, confident and reflective language learners and to provide them with a foundation that will equip them for further language studies.
