Mathematics

At Hunloke Park Primary School we believe that all of our pupils should achieve to their full potential: academically, creatively, socially, physically and personally. We aim to create a caring, supportive, happy and secure learning environment where all the variety of successes of the children can be celebrated. Mathematics is both a key skill within school, and a life skill to be utilised throughout every person’s day to day experiences.

Mathematics gives children a way of coming to terms with their environment. Practical tasks and real life problems can be approached from a mathematical point of view. Mathematics provides children with imaginative areas of exploration and study and gives them the materials upon which to exercise their mathematical skills. These skills are a necessary tool of everyday life. Mathematics should help children to develop an appreciation of, and enjoyment in, the subject itself; as well as a realisation of its role in other curriculum areas.

Fluency Skills/Progression Document

English

At Hunloke Park Primary School we believe that Reading and Writing are key life skills which children will continue to use in their future lives. We believe that it is our responsibility to foster these skills, with the children we teach, so they are able to communicate with the world in coherent and empathetic way.

Reading gives children a way of understanding their world, an understanding of others and an understanding of themselves. We use Monster Phonics to develop the children in their ability as early readers, using their phonics knowledge to develop and build their word recognition and fluency. Children then progress onto developing their reading skills using the Talk for Reading approach, interacting with a range of texts both for academic success and also to develop the love of reading. Through discussion and using a range of texts we show children the opportunities open to them as readers. We therefore aim to foster our children to become avid readers in an ever changing world.

We use the Talk for Writing approach to develop our children as writers.   This gives the children an ability to interact with the world in a really personal way. We develop our children to see writing as a communication tool for their thoughts, feelings and growing knowledge. Through the use of other curriculum areas we allow children to practice their skills in grammar, punctuation and composition to fully be able to articulate their thoughts and views to a wider audience. We follow the National Curriculum across the school which allows for progression and further development of their English skills.

Science

At Hunloke Park, teachers ensure they have progressively covered the skills and concepts required in the National Curriculum. All learning is enquiry based, allowing the children to ask and answer their own questions. We aim to develop scientific skills and concepts which are revisited throughout the different topics.

The key knowledge identified by each year group is informed by the national curriculum and builds towards identified phase ‘end points’ in accordance with NC expectations. Key skills are also mapped for each year group and are progressive throughout the school. These too ensure systematic progression to identified skills end points which are in accordance with the Working Scientifically skills expectations of the national curriculum. The curriculum is designed to ensure that children are able to acquire key scientific knowledge through practical experiences; using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently. The school’s approach to science takes account of the school’s own context, ensuring access to people with specialist expertise and places of scientific interest as part of the school’s commitment to learning outside the classroom. Cross curricular opportunities are also identified, mapped and planned to ensure contextual relevance. Children are encouraged to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings and a love of science is nurtured through a whole school ethos and a varied science curriculum.
