CURRICULUM LONG TERM PLANS

EYFS Early Years Foundation Stage
Children in the Reception class are working in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which precedes Key Stage 1 (KS1). The work in EYFS is planned from the Early Learning Goals which cover the following areas:

• Personal and Social Development
• Language
• Mathematics
• Knowledge and Understanding of the World
• Physical Development
• Creative Development

Reading:
Children coming into EYFS are taught to read through the Letters and Sounds Programme. This is continued through into KS1. For further information, please use the link to the left.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)
Teaching and learning in KS1 is planned to cover the National Curriculum through a cross curricular, topic style approach.

Mathematics:
The children follow the National Curriculum for Mathematics as shown in the link to the left.

Reading:
Children in Year 1 and Year 2 continue to learn to read using the Letters and Sounds Programme Our reading scheme is Oxford Reading Tree and we use Big Cat texts for some comprehension activities. Furthermore, we use the following strategies for developing independent reading and comprehension:
• daily guided reading sessions
• 1-2-1 reading sessions
• reading and comprehension homework
• in class reading opportunities

Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5 & 6)
Teaching and learning in KS2 is planned to cover the National Curriculum through a cross curricular, topic style approach.

Numeracy:
The children follow the National Curriculum for Numeracy, as shown in the link to the left.

Reading:
Children in KS2 continue to develop their independent reading and comprehension through the following strategies:
• Year 3 and Year 4 children follow ‘Read, Write Inc’ programme to develop spelling strategies
• Year 5 and Year 6 children have a daily spelling session to reinforce key spelling skills
• daily guided reading sessions
